“Beam your own and I’ll beam mine!” says a popular pastor in Lagos, Nigeria, with reference to the versatility and power of the television in making a ministry break forth in grand style.

This minister said he struggled for many years and his church didn’t just grow past a handful of people until he harnessed the power of the television medium. Within a short time that he had the opportunity to showcase his messages on the television, the church grew to several hundreds of people, and today, thousands of people throng to his church every week.

Why is the television so powerful? The reasons are many, but in this article, I will be discussing 6 major reasons why I believe the television is the king of media.

Why is the television so powerful? The reasons are many, but in this article, I will be discussing 6 major reasons why I believe the television is the king of media.

Reason #1: An Average Home Has a Television Set

One of the major reasons why the medium of television is so strong is because, practically every household has a television set! This means in a town with a population of 2 million people, at least 1.5 million homes will have a television set. This means when you air your programme on air, it is likely to be viewed by many people all at once.

I was so astounded to learn how many people saw my television broadcast that only aired once a week just for 5 minutes! It went so viral to the point that years later, people that saw me on the road still recollected having seen me on air one time or the other.

The reason is, every household, regardless of income or status, has a TV set at home or at work.

Reason #2: You Enter People’s Homes without a Pass

I live in Lagos, believed to be the busiest city and commercial nerve center of Nigeria. You hardly can get people’s attention in Lagos because everyone appears too busy. Most houses are heavily fenced and gated.

Most people won’t let you into their house to deliver your message. They don’t want to be disturbed, especially if they’re rich and comfortable. But through the medium of television, you break into people’s living rooms and bedrooms – and wherever they have a television set in the house – to deliver your message! Imagine yourself talking to people that otherwise wouldn’t give you audience in their living or bedroom without any formal invitation. You break into people’s privacy without protocols!

Reason #3: Television Reaches More Potential Audience

I have been in the ministry for more than two decades, and being a media personality, I have explored a number of media outlets to showcase my ministry and products, and in all honesty, none comes close in efficiency and accuracy to television showcases! Just name it: I have printed and distributed as many as 25,000 flyers all at once, to promote certain specialized programmes.

I’ve advertised in the newspapers and what have you! But when you compare the result with just a programme of 5 minutes on the television, wow, the difference is clear! I’ve heard many ministers complain about the huge cost of going on the television. Some ministers even see it as a waste of resources. “How can I spend hundreds of thousands just on television broadcasts when I have yet many other things to do with money?” they complain.

What I want you to realize is that the dividends and rewards of showcasing your ministry on the television far outweigh the money you will ever invest in it. Truth be told, television is quite capital intensive, and not everybody can afford the huge expenses.

However, if you believe God for such avenues, He can give you the opportunity in a miraculous way.

Reason #4: It Gives Your Ministry More Credibility

People tend to believe what they see on the television to be more authentic and valid than any other medium of communication or publicity. Why is this so? Well, you judge it by yourself. Which would you give more credibility between the information on a flyer and the one you see on the television?

I think part of the arguable reasons might be because people tend to believe no person would spend so much money to be on the television to promote something that is not real. Or the fact that you wouldn’t find your way to the prestigious medium of television if you weren’t for real.

Do you get the point? While people may pass up the information they see on a flyer or poster, they are not likely to pass up what they see on the television!

Reason #5: Little Competition

Competition. That’s the right word to describe what happens on the social media. It’s the survival of the fittest, so to speak! Go to your Facebook or Instagram wall and see how many people battle to capture your attention.

As a matter of fact, experts say if you really want to get the required audience through your blog, or social media account, you have to be ten times as busy in interacting with people online and producing great contents and daily posts that will keep your audience engaged.

It takes a lot of work to get the attention you want because millions of people are battling for the same audience you want out there on the social media.

One major reason this is so is because most of the social media platforms are free to use; and therefore, every Tom, Dick and Harry is there jostling for attention! But it is not so with the medium of television.

The competition isn’t as horrible on the television as it is on other platforms of communication. Just about one out of a hundred ministries showcases their programme on the television. You know the reason? Many ministers run away from the television like a plague because of the high cost.
This is the more reason you should see the medium of television as your Goliath, and by faith in God, you should run towards it! You may not have the means to do it right now, but you can believe God for the means and you can be sure He will make a way. Your ministry will gain more credibility when people begin to see your programme on the television. I knew a particular pastor in Lagos, Nigeria, several years ago. Today, his network of churches is one of the largest and forceful in Nigeria. When he started the
church many years ago, he struggled just like many other pastors with fledgling ministries. But this pastor saw something that many other pastors handled with levity – the power of the television in spreading your ministry. So every opportunity he had, he began to showcase his programmes on one television station, which grew to two, three..till his church programme was on almost all TV stations. Today, the result is mind-blowing! God can take you there too. He is no respecter of persons.

Reason #6: With Great Contents, You ‘Blow’!

One more important thing before I go. Even though I’ve endeavoured to establish here that television is the king of media, I must not fail to let you know that having a successful television ministry is no magic.

It doesn’t just work automatically. You have to be strategic with the types of content you put on the Television once you have the opportunity. You must ensure to air content types that will appeal to your audience.

I have watched quite a number of broadcasts by certain ministers, and my sincere judgment is that they had no business being on the television! Why invest so much money to put a broadcast on air that nobody would like to watch? It is counterproductive!

In order words, with great television contents, your ministry can go places!
